We're Growing Back Better

Corporate Director

Up to £111k

This is a highly visible leadership role across the organisation, in which you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the full range of the Council’s work – both internally as a Director to a large cohort of staff, and outside as an ambassador and advocate for our organisation and for the Braintree District.

Working closely with the Chief Executive, you’ll lead and develop the following key service areas:

  • Finance
  • Governance & Legal Services
  • Human Resources, Organisational Development & Learning
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Customer Services
  • Commercial Services

The Council has ambitious plans for growing the District in a sustainable way and we are looking for someone who can bring energy, new thinking and ideas to help deliver those plans. We want you to bring a strong philosophy of continuous improvement, challenge and advocating for innovation that works. Members place great store by the stability and robustness of our core corporate services, which in turn underpins the ambition of the wider organisation. While some applicants may come from a CIPFA background, your leadership style and expertise is more important than your professional path to date. Commercial acumen and practical experience are very important – our success to date has been grounded in our ability to identify and realise new business models and income streams, and that must continue to underpin the future.

You’ll be joining a very strong and collaborative Corporate Management Team, and we’ve embraced a distributed leadership that has proved extremely resilient during the pandemic. All three Corporate Directors deputise up on occasion, and the need for a more regular Gold Command role has helped to strengthen the team even further. The teams reporting to you are experienced and high-performing, a number of new Heads of Service and other senior managers have recently joined (or are due to be appointed by the end of this year), so you will be closely involved in establishing and leading this new middle-leadership cohort.

Those of us who have worked in other authorities are often struck by the difference in working atmosphere, relationships between members and officers, and overall willingness to be pragmatic in the service of our goals. Our commercial approach means that there have been no requests for budget reductions in the past three years; instead, we’ve balanced the books from other income streams. Currently we have a projected deficit of £1.6m, and are working on achieving savings and efficiencies as well as increasing income streams to meet this budget shortfall.

Why join us now? Well, we believe that Braintree is a really great place to work, with a high level of ambition for the organisation, for the communities we serve, and for the individuals who bring their talent to our doors. There’s a tangible sense of shared vision, direction and optimism, with clear alignment of democratic and professional perspectives.

It’s all looking bright at Braintree.
